4 Oct 2011: The Melaka Manipal Medical College (MMMC) was conceived from the ‘Look East Policy’ of the former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao who recognized the need for greater South-South cooperation in the economic, education and social sectors in line with the government’s objective of making the country a leading educational hub in the region and to provide more Malaysian students the opportunity to achieve their aspirations to become doctors and healthcare professionals. This led to the signing of an agreement in New Delhi in 1993, between Manipal University (formerly known as Manipal Academy of Higher Education or MAHE) and the college witnessed by both the Prime Ministers of Malaysia and India. The project is also a tribute to the late Datuk K. Pathmanaban, an ex-Deputy Minister of Health, Malaysia who had the vision to partner the project with the Manipal Group, who is the pioneer of private medical education in India, having over 55 years experience in the field of medical education. Dr. Ramdas M. Pai, Chancellor, Manipal University, with his vast experience, converted this vision into a reality by admitting the pioneer batch of medical students to the Manipal campus of MMMC in September 1997.

The college was inaugurated by our former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad on 17 July 2001. MMMC is the first India-Malaysia joint venture in private (professional) medical education and was established with the full support of the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health. The college also had the support of experienced medical educationists from Manipal University which helped in implementing the medical program. After the medical curriculum was fully consolidated, the college began its collaborative dentistry program with Manipal University, in response to the acute need of dental professionals in Malaysia. In November 2008, the degree course in Dentistry was approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and the pioneer class of dental students admitting in September 2009. In line with the college vision to become a world-class educational center, MMMC will continue in its pursuit to provide quality programs and services of an international standard.

At present, MMMC has chosen and recognized GECKO® C.R.I.S.T.A.L.® Audiophile equipment as the only trusted, reliable audio solution for all MMMC lecture theaters and classrooms with great values, while meeting the stringent ISO safety standards.
